George Henry Cook was born in Wivenhoe on 19 August 1857. He was just over three years old when his mother died in 1861 after suffering with Typhus fever and his father and two siblings moved into his grandmother’s house at Quay Street. Sometime after George’s father remarried in 1862, the family moved to Park Road.

George’s  career in the maritime industry started as a Rope Maker at the age of 13 and he eventually progressed through to become a Master Mariner. At the age of 14, he was already at sea aboard the ‘Sovereign’, which was probably coasting with coal. By 21 he was an Able Bodied Seaman on board the famous yacht ‘Jullanar’ at the commencement of her successful racing era. George also crewed on the ‘Rosabelle’ owned by Theodore Pym and was Master on the racing yacht ‘Milly’.

George married Sarah Ann Shipp at St Mary the Virgin Church in Wivenhoe on 9 March 1880 and they went on to have 10 children between 1880 and 1896. They lived in Malting Yard until the late 1890’s when they moved to a house in Clifton Terrace.

After arriving in Antwerp, Belgium on the SS Lindale on 1 March 1914, George suffered congestion on his lungs from inhaling sulphuric acid fumes whilst loading the ship in Antwerp the following day. He was taken to the Stuivenberg Hospital in Antwerp, Belgium, where he died at 6:00pm on 3 March 1914 and was buried at the Kiel cemetery in Antwerp. Two of his sons, George and Stanley, travelled to Belgium for the funeral.

Thanks John, trying to work out the relationship as my gt grand mother, Ruth Mary Cook, 1879- 1955, was the daughter of George Cook, b. 1832 and his second wife Eliza Jane Ridgley, 1839-1918. Ruth and George Henry, b. 1858 would have been half siblings, so she would have been the " aunt " of George Henry b. 1885.

Old George

The Shipwright Arms gave up on Thursday night.  George Hillyard, :Old George: had been there for 52years, save for a break of 8 years after his wife died/. at the age of 12 he was working in the Rowhedge shipyard and at 19 he sailed with the American yacht Margarita in Scotland.  The yacht was caught in the Mediterranean when the American-Spanish war broke out.  It ran the gauntlet of the Spanish blockade.

Mesing about on the water

Wivenhoe river front with a few boats

Wivenhoe Congregational church

This is a photo of Chris Damp's inauguration as minister of Wivenhoe Congregational Church in the late 1980s. Although I recognise many of the faces (I was a regular weekly attendee at the church as a child) I can't name that many people, however, I think I can see:

Chris is standing in the doorway, without the beard. On his right is, I think, Pat (whose surname escapes me). On his left, the older lady with glasses is Miss Potter, for many years church organist. I remember her running the choir and the Sunday school. Next to Miss Potter is Albert Nunn, my grandad, who was a lay preacher at the church in the 1990s. Bert's wife, Beryl, is in the front row with the natty pink handbag.

On the left of the photo: I can see Sarah, in the yellow dress, who helped out with Sunday school and the Guides. To Sarah's left, in the turquoise dress and standing by the door is Joan, née Potter, and her sister, Barbara Donohoe, standing just behind the woman in red.

Thanks to Helen Barrell for photo and text.
The lady seated at the front (far right) wearing a necklace is Mabel Hillyard, a life long member of the Congregational Church in Wivenhoe. Thanks Nick.

You will only get hit over the head by a smuggler

The custom house Wivenhoe Oct 4th 1780.

Seamen or able bodied landmen wanted for the Repulse custom cutter  in the service of the revenue at this port.  they will be protected from the press gangs and met with proper encouragement on applying at this office or to Captain Daniel Harvey at Wivenhoe.

I can feel a treasure trip coming on.

Whereas the sloop Katherine, Capt. Luke Methuen, from Rotterdam was lately lost on the gunfleeet sands and had seven casks of Spanish Dollars stowed in her stern sheets, which are now buried in the sand :  These are to give notice that whoever is capable and will undertake the fishing up the said money, shall have all fitting encouragement by applying to Capt. Daniel Harvey of the custom house Wivenhoe .
